Our Giving Back
In 1978, Rob Johnston’s desire to help feed the hungry at Thanksgiving led to a door-to-door campaign at a single apartment community for canned goods to share with those in need. Moved by the grateful response to the 220 cans divided and delivered to 8 families, the FCM staff made a promise to do more the following year. Each year, the offering grew in size and effort.
In 1987, the Atlanta Apartment Association (AAA) adopted this idea and created the annual AAA Food-A-Thon, benefiting the Atlanta Community Food Bank Charities, which is the largest private food drive in the United States.
In 2012, the owner, management and vendor members of the AAA collected enough food to serve 5.7 million full meals to those in need in metro Atlanta. This program has since been adopted by other National Apartment Association chapters around the country. The family of FCM employees supports the food drive through payroll deductions and active leadership of the AAA Food-A-Thon Committee. FCM’s involvement with the food bank has exceeded $2 million in the last decade with a commitment to achieving even higher contributions over the next decade.
